Diversity: The Heart of My Progressive Politics

Salam Mutiara, I am Syerleena Abdul Rashid, Member of Parliament for Bukit Bendera. Born and raised in Penang, I am dedicated and committed to fight for a nation that can provide better opportunities for Malaysians, irrespective of ethnicity, religious beliefs and gender.

I was formerly a Member of the Penang State Legislative Assembly for Seri Delima and before that, served as a Councillor of the Penang Island City Council.

I am an alumnus of Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) and the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL).

My journey in public service has seen me through all 3 layers of governance – local government, state government and federal. In parliament, I am the chairperson for All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia (APPGM) - Refugee Policies, a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee for Women, Children and Social Development, as well as committee members for both All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia (APPGM) - Political Funding and ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights.

I am deeply committed to social development and the principle of leaving no one behind. I understand that a truly progressive society is one that acknowledges and addresses the needs of all its members, including minority groups, army veterans, people with disabilities, and those dealing with mental illness. I believe in creating inclusive policies that respect and uphold the rights of these often-marginalized groups, ensuring they have access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need to thrive. In addition to this, I am dedicated to breaking through economic barriers. I recognize that economic inequality is a significant hurdle for many, limiting their access to essential services and opportunities for growth. Through policy reform and advocacy, I am working to create a more equitable economic landscape where everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, has the chance to prosper. As the daughter of retired teachers, I recognize the pivotal role that education plays in shaping individuals and building a nation. I firmly believe in the power of education as a catalyst for personal growth, social progress, and national development. With this understanding, I am dedicated to championing education reforms that focus on providing quality education to every child, regardless of their background or circumstances. My passion for education reforms stems from my firsthand experience witnessing the transformative impact that dedicated teachers and inclusive educational practices can have on students' lives. I am committed to advocating for policies that prioritize equitable access to education, invest in teacher development, and foster a supportive learning environment for all.
